Meet Your Wallingford Trainers
Every program is built and led by a certified trainer who knows your assessment inside and out.

Derek
Derek is Co-Owner and Managing Partner of Active Health, with over 20 years in the fitness industry and classical training in anatomy and biomechanics. He enjoys teaching and working with clients and trainers alike — helping them realize their potential and solve real problems.

Tyler
Tyler holds a Master’s in Kinesiology and Sports Performance from Point Loma Nazarene University and has more than 10 years of experience training everyone from youth athletes and NFL players to clients focused on weight loss, strength, and long-term health. He specializes in sport performance, functional movement, and keeping clients as injury-free as possible, and loves seeing them hit that first real win — better performance, more strength, or simply getting back to doing what they love.

Yeny
Yeny has 10 years of experience in the fitness industry. Her coaching goes beyond simply telling you what exercises to do — combining strength training, movement, nutrition, recovery, and accountability into a plan that fits your real life. An avid runner herself, she understands firsthand how strength, endurance, and resilience translate beyond the gym and into everyday life.

John
John has trained clients for over two years, specializing in strength and muscular hypertrophy work as well as injury rehabilitation. What he enjoys most is getting to know each client — their goals, their limitations, and why they decided to start training — so the program actually fits the person.

Common Questions
What people usually ask before booking their first session.
What happens during my free 2-week trial?
It's not a generic trial everyone gets the same version of. After your phone call and in-person assessment, we build a short program based on what we think you'd actually need — and you choose whether to train 2 or 3 days a week for those two weeks. It's a live trial, which means you're treated exactly like a full member from day one, not run through a separate "sample" experience.
Do I need training experience to start?
No. Your program is built around your assessment results, whether this is your first structured workout or you're returning after an injury, surgery, or a long break from training.
What's the difference between private, semi-private, and group training?
Semi-private is 1 trainer to 4 clients — but everyone is on their own individualized program. It's the same training as one-on-one, just with shared attention instead of a trainer's undivided time. You don't need to find people to fill your group; we handle that. You can also move around: change your training times or keep the same ones, whichever fits your schedule. Our large group classes, like Boot Camp, are a completely different product — a shared class format, not individualized programming.
Do I have to commit to a full year?
No — programs run in 3, 6, or 12-month terms. The longer the term, the lower your price per session. Your trainer can walk through the exact numbers for each length on your first call.
I have an injury or medical condition — do I need my doctor's clearance first?
We recommend everyone get medical clearance before starting a new exercise program — there's always some degree of risk with physical activity, regardless of your health history. If you're managing an existing injury or condition, our physician-integrated model also means we can coordinate directly with your care team as part of your program.

"I have been training with active health for about 3 months, doing 1 on 1 personal training. The trainers are fantastic and super knowledgeable. Even though I've been working out my whole life, I find I have learned a lot and they are helping find all my weaknesses (in a good way!). I'm strengthening in a way that I haven't been able to do by myself before. I'm 42 so I'm not super young any more and have found I lose strength quicker now if I don't workout. The works outs are targeted for me and where I'm at physically and I love that. I'm moving to semi private sessions now and I'm looking forward to seeing where I'll be in another 3 months and beyond!"
"Active Health has helped me so much to get active (after years of inactivity) and stronger. Their personal attention to my goals and training has been key. I had a shoulder injury that I did not think I could overcome, but they showed me that building strength actually alleviates the pain. I have been able to do so much more physically than I have in many years. I highly recommend them. UPDATE 5/30/2026 Active health continues to help me with my goals. I have lost weight this past year and have had multiple hip and back issues that they continue to work through with me. No more being sedentary when I am in pain. Movement helps. Thank you!"
"Active Health has a process that keeps you engaged, inspires you to do more, all while insuring results that count without injury. It was very important to me that my 17 surgeries were taken into consideration when signing up. Tyler and Derek made sure I was comfortable in each exercise. We work together and communicate each session to adjust as needed to make sure there is no bad pain. Highly recommend them to get stronger, increase your overall health and learn a lot. There is not doubt that health is the new wealth."
"I just switched to Active Health two months ago after 18 months of semi-private sessions at a different gym. I've been really impressed by the company's organization and trainers. I'm able to book appointments months in advance (rather than week to week) and get frequent reminders of my upcoming appointments. There's also a great deal more flexibility when I am not able to make my allotted two sessions per week - compared to my last experience where it was "use it or lose it". Active Health allows you a certain amount of time after your membership term ends to use any unused sessions. The trainers have been top-notch. Beginning with my initial evaluation, it was clear to me that the trainers are experienced and highly knowledgeable. They are easy to talk to, pay close attention to proper form, and communicate clearly. I also love the organization and transparency of their workouts. Each session my day's routine is displayed on a large screen and always consists of three supersets (which change each session to provide variety). This helps me to stay motivated when I see that the "end is in sight" and the sets, reps, weights, and intensity of each exercise are clearly visible. No mystery involved, having to ask "how many reps?" or being asked by the trainer "what weight did you use last time?" like I experienced at my previous gym. In addition to all this, I found Active Health's prices to be competitive and a good value."
"This is my happy place — if I could give it a million stars, I would! I moved to the area and was looking for a gym where I could train to get me back on my feet after a health setback, and I found that and so much more! The trainers are very kind and incredibly knowledgeable. They will modify some exercises so I can perform them without pain, but still get the benefit of a good and complete workout and keep progressing in my mobility and strength. I'm so grateful! Also, the equipment is always clean and in great condition, which is very important in a gym. Highly and enthusiastically recommend Active Health in Wallingford!"
"Where do I start…this place has been life changing for me. When I started here in early May I felt like an absolute mess with pain all over my body and anxiety ridden like crazy. I also had 0 confidence that I would be able to do this. Meeting Derek M. changed that. He immediately took me and my challenges on head first by getting to know my story and my struggles. He encouraged me from day 1 and adapted my workouts to whatever was needed for me on a particular day. In the two months I have been here I have seen changes not only in my physical health but more importantly my mental health. Derek knew right away it was my nervous system that was disregulated and holding me back from things and he pushed me (in a good way) to not be afraid. I can't say enough great things about this place. Thank you Active Health for changing my life and I can't wait to see where many more months ahead will take me."
